What is Vegetable-Tanned Leather?

Hola Capitan has a fondness for leather that easily develops patina and shows scratches. This is because such leather carries traces of the user’s habits and how they handle it, creating a story unique to the individual. One type of leather that beautifully captures these marks is vegetable-tanned leather.

The product in this photo is the Fisherman Multi-Wallet in Sand color.
The upper part shows the wallet’s initial appearance in Sand, while the lower part shows how it looks after about two months of use.

Leather types are distinguished by how they are processed.
Vegetable-tanned leather is crafted using natural tannins extracted from plants. Unlike chemically treated leathers, it retains the cow’s natural wrinkles, spots, and scratches, which appear authentically on the surface.

These natural features—such as veins, spots, wrinkles, and minor scars—are hallmarks of vegetable-tanned leather. However, leather with deep scars that may affect durability is not used for products.

We hope that the layers of time you spend with Hola Capitan products will accumulate, allowing them to accompany you for many years to come.
